Hydrogeology Journal

IAH’s Hydrogeology Journal (HJ) continues to be a premier journal for groundwater professionals, with eight issues (about 200 articles) each year. The editorial team and our publisher, Springer Nature, discussed the healthy growth of the journal and potential opportunities for its future at their annual meeting. Articles had been accepted from 35 countries during the previous year and there had been a growth in readership from the Asia-Pacific region. With two upcoming special issues, ‘Interplay of Groundwater, Geology and Geological Processes’ and ‘Advances in Socio-hydrogeology’, as well as a topical collection from the IAH 2023 congress, the future looks positive.

The increasing use of artificial intelligence in academic publishing will present HJ and the editorial team with future challenges. Designing effective ways to both embrace the potential benefits and counter abuse of developing technologies will be an ongoing task.

The Editors’ Choice articles for the Journal were announced, selected from all the articles published in HJ during the previous year. HJ’s editors considered these to be exceptional, ranging from outstanding science to philosophical interest, challenging arguments, and more. They highlight the importance of groundwater in our world, how we all interact with groundwater, and how we might preserve and manage groundwater resources in the future.
