World Water Day on 22 March promotes global action on the water and sanitation crisis. It is coordinated by UN‑Water and involves many UN partners. IAH supports this and contributes to the UN World Water Development Report. Several national chapters run Hydrogeoday outreach events. We are strengthening collaboration with many UN bodies to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. World Water Day
The first World Day for Glaciers was held on March 21, 2025, as part of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 (IYGP 2025). In 2025 World Water Day was dedicated to the theme of ‘Glacier Preservation’. IAH members organised several successful events to mark the occasion.
On 21st March, we held a webinar titled “Glaciers and Groundwater Interactions: Challenges in a Changing Climate”. Groundwater scientists from around the globe were invited by IAH to participate in the event. An overview of the research issues was presented, with two case studies showing the importance of groundwater in storing glacial meltwater. Panellists considered future solutions and research needed. Most of the Hydrogeoday activities in support of World Water Day took place across 27 Spanish provinces – see https://www.aih-ge.org/hidrogeodia-2025/. Other Hydrogeoday events took place in Andorra, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador Mexico, Peru, Portugal and South Africa, a record of 11 participating countries, including Spain. It is remarkable how this outreach initiative is spreading beyond Spain, reinforcing the impact of this shared effort in raising awareness about hydrogeology.
