Membership

Membership increased from 2022, from 4080 to 4226 in 2023. There were 253 students with free membership and 527 students in total including paid-for memberships. We supported 298 members from low income backgrounds with sponsored memberships, with costs for 157 members covered by central funding and the remainder by national chapters and other philanthropic donations.

The full membership figures for each Region were:

Sub-Saharan Africa                                      351

North Africa and the Middle East             177

Asia                                                                419

Australasia and the Pacific                         695

Eastern Europe and Central Asia              61

North America                                              533

Latin America and the Caribbean             238

Western Europe                                          1752

Total                                                               4226

This represents a significant recovery in membership following the Covid outbreak, though this is still tempered by difficult financial circumstances for many members. A number felt unable to continue their paid memberships, though we were able to some.

The number of student members was consistent with the previous year, but with our recent initiative of free (Associate) student memberships being especially popular in Canada, India, Italy and Spain. Our hope is that many students will choose to continue their memberships once they finish their studies, and will take advantage of the 25% discounts on fees available for new professionals.

The number of corporate members increased slightly to 74.
